Financial Analyst

Job Description

I worked as a liaison between cross-functional dept's and that gave me the ability to meet a lot of people in the company. It allowed to me to get out of the duldrems of only being in finance. Finance people can be bit anal (due to them being so analytical) so be prepared. The more you know about Microsoft Excel, the better off you will be. So get to know the more complex functions such as: VLOOKUP, Macros, Pivot Tables, etc.

Pros

1) Stability - Overall, a finance career is a stable job. There are usually an abundance of jobs and there is always a need.

2) Routine - For people that don't like a lot of change with their job, finance could be a career for you. There is change but you can always count on month-end close, quarter-end close, and year-end close.

3) Insider Info - You have access to certain information that other employees aren't privy to. You can also see how the overall company is doing and in what direction they are heading based on their financials.

Cons

1) Routine - Month-end, Quarter-end, and Year-end close seem like they happen everyday. Time sneaks up on you very quickly and it sometimes feel like my only job is to prepare for this times.

2) Insider Info - It's great to know this info but sometimes it can work against you. Especially when you have to deal with headcount. When you do a headcount analysis and have to cut some of your employees, they may be your friends and that could be uncomfortable.

3) Analysis - I did soooo many spreadsheets I got sick of them.

4) Perks - There are no perks when you work in finance. Finance is overhead and it's a thankless job. If you want perks, I've learned to go work in Sales, Marketing, or Engineering.
