Job Description
Overall, I like being a legal recruiter at this point in my life. I had planned on going to law school, but after working at a Wall Street law firm for 4 years, and seeing how miserable a lot of the attorneys were, I was highly turned off from going. I figured, if this is as good as it got, then I don't want any part of it, so I went into recruiting using my previous industry experience.
It's been great to get people jobs. I recruit on all levels, from high-end attorneys down to receptionists. There was this one time where one of my candidates I had interviewed, a single parent applying for a legal secretary position didn't have any gas money to go to her interview, nor a babysitter. So I picked my candidate up and drove her to the interview while babysitting her daughter while she was meeting with the attorneys. After the interview, I drove her home and bought her a gas card so that she could go to work the next Monday ... Because she got the job.
That is a story that will stick with me for a while. However, I can't see myself doing this forever. I see myself becoming very greedy and money driven because you can make a lot of money in this business. However, I feel like it's been poisoning my soul a bit. I'll do this for now, until the next logical step presents itself
Pros
It feels great to get someone a job -- you can really make a difference in someone's life; It feels great to make a perfect match for the client's end -- I like how we are viewed as legal staffing consultants; Can be financially rewarding; Great alternative career for someone who went to law school but doesn't want to be a lawyer
Cons
It is really competitive -- it can be cutthroat -- your partners / teammates can be greedy and untrustworthy; it is a really fast paced industry and the job can be very stressful at times; the day starts pretty early at 7:30am.
