Cons

You need a variety of skills for this occupation and if you're missing 1 you can't play for a living. You have to be very good with your money as you need a bankroll to play through the bad luck. If you can't handle losing a lot of money you can't handle this job. Additionally it's very stressful. Many people I went to college with look at me differently as well. They have a very condescending attitude because they're close minded and ignorant to the possibilities life has to offer. Gambling in general has a "rebel" and "bad guy" stereotype so you will have to deal with this as well.

Pros

I actually really liked this job. If you are a people person and you like coffee this is a very cool job to have. For the most part talking with your customers and getting to know them is encouraged so you actually can develop friendships. I also got to know my co-workers really well and they were all pretty young, I would say in the age range of 18-27ish mostly. Most of my co-workers worked at Starbucks as a barista during the day but used it to pay the bills while they pursued art, school, or music. This made work conversation much more interesting.

You get to drink as much coffee as you want and can experiment with drinks for free. You also get a free 1lb of coffee every week for yourself.

I learned to make every single type of espresso coffee drink that Starbucks offers, and will never forget my way around an espresso bar. You will always carry this knowledge with you and when you host coffee at your place making a latte, mocha, or Carmel macchiato won’t phase you.

There is a stock employee purchase plan.

Lastly, if you are somewhat shy then this job is a perfect job to develop an outgoing personality. You are kind of forced to talk to people every morning and during the day so talking to strangers will become second nature.

Cons

Waking up at 3:30am in the morning to be at work for a 4am opening. People really do get coffee that early and you are expected to be there half an hour early. Usually at Starbucks they allow you to choose between a closing shift or an opening shift. Opening sucks because you have to wake up early, closing sucks because you have to clean all that grime, coffee grounds, espresso bar, etc. When closing you can often stay an hour past the closing time.

This is the food and customer service industry so customers can often be rude, angry, and just plain mean. You have to learn to not take things personal. They could complain that the drink you just made them tastes awful and personally insult your competence. You just got to get over it and assume they are just having a bad day. If you are ultra sensitive then, you’ll have to get used to this. People are often cranky before their morning coffee and if they feel that it doesn’t taste right you, as the barista, can take the brunt of their anger.

You need to be self motivated and continue to motivate yourself daily, weekly, monthly, and year over year. However, for those that do succeed, it can be very lucrative and flexible.

The business does become easier the longer you are in the business (as long as you stay pro-active) They say that 80% of the business is performed by 20% of the agents. Where do you fit in?

Pros

1) Flexibility - I can most of the time control my own hours. If I don't want to work one day, I don't have to work. And, if I have a very good year, I can choose to take days, weeks, or months off when I want. I also do not need to be indoors most of the time.

2) Business Owner - I am really a one man company running a business. I motivate myself and don't report to anyone.

3) Unlimited Income Potential - I have the ability to make as much money as I want. There is not a salary ceiling. I also have the ability to make money a lot of money very quickly.

4) Low Cost to Entry - Becoming a Realtor has a low initial investment. You can expect to spend about $1,000 - $2,000 to start your own business. There aren't many businesses you can start with this little cost.

5) Ease of Entry - All you need to become a Realtor is to pass a state license exam and to complete some education requirements. Some of these education requirements can be satisfied through classes taken in college.

Cons

1) Stiff Competition - Real Estate has a low barrier to entry so there is a lot of competition.

2) Income Instability - Since most Realtors are paid through a 100% commission based structure, it is very common to not receive a paycheck bi-weekly or monthly.

3) Out-of-pocket expenses - All expenses come out of your own pocket. Some expenses include: flyers, open house signs, websites, Realtor dues, gas, car repairs, etc. So it highly recommended that you have a decent amount of cash reserves to accommodate these expenses in case your income generated from your sales is not enough.

4) Weekend work - Depending on where you are in your real estate career, can determine how many weekends you need to work. Many successful agents are able to work few weekends. Some of these agents can have other agents hold their open houses for them thereby reducing their weekend work. But many times, especially in the beginning stages of your career, holding open houses on weekends are great way to find potential buyer clients.

5) Business Owner - Since you are often the one and only employee/employer of your own company, you need to be able to motivate yourself and to stay motivated. Sometimes this can be a great disadvantage depending on your level of work ethic and self motivation.

6) Cyclical Business - This also depends on where you are in your career, but the real estate business has its "ups" and "downs". And you have to know how to manage both. You need to be able to multi-task when it's busy, and you need to know what to do keep yourself busy when it's not. Managing the "downs" of the business are much tougher.

Well if you are a people person this is a great job because you can meet people every 20 minutes. First off there is a big difference between working for Supercuts and for working at most smaller Hair Boutiques that you see.

Pay 1) Supercuts you get a salary that is fixed. You don't rent a chair, ie. you don't have a specific chair but share with all the other Hair Stylists. You can make more money by increasing your productivity. You increase your productivity by essentially increasing your customers per hour. So how fast can you cut good hair.

You do not Rent a Chair 2)In most boutiques you rent a chair from the boutique owner and pay them a monthly rent for the chair. So if you give 1 haircut or give 1000 haircuts you pay the same amount to the boutique owner. You are basically your own boss, so you can work alot or work little. If there are more than one hair stylist working, walk-in's are taken on a round robin basis.

Flexibility 3) If you want flexibility you better choose Supercuts because at most hair boutiques your chair is yours for certain hours. Most other hair stylists will not trade you hours as their clients come in at those times.

Relaxing 4) This job is pretty low stress.

Cons

The worst thing about this job is the bad customers. Occasionally you will get a bad customer. The most common thing that happens is some guy will come in and be like "give me the brad pitt haircut" and he has curly hair. Nu uh, that is so not gong to work, but he still has it in his mind to cut it like that.

Or a woman will come in and ask for the Meg Ryan haircut from Sleepless in Seattle and she has a fro. Once again not going to work.

“Working with kids is amazing!” I am completely amazed at how a person at such a young age can overcome such overwhelming odds and continue to be so strong and resilient. As a pediatric nurse I have the advantage of working with a diverse patient population. From infants and adolescents I am still amazed by each person’s strength to pull through such aggressive treatments.

“Inspiration.” I am inspired not only by the young people I meet everyday, but also by the people that I am surrounded by everyday. The multidisciplinary team comprised of nurses, doctors, ChildLife Specialists, social workers, parents, (just to name a few) dedicated to making a difference brings greater meaning to my job.

“Great hours!” Although I work the standard 7am-7pm twelve hour shifts, I work 3 days a week and have 4 days off! (Yes, I am working full time) By the third day of work, it gets to be quite exhausting, but there’s nothing like looking forward to the next 4 days off of work. This also provides flexibility to my schedule if I wanted to pursue other things. Ex: pick up a part-time job of choice or pursue a Masters degree in Nursing (one of my long-term goals)

Cons

“Physically, mentally, emotionally draining…” Nursing is a very physical occupation. There is a lot of running around and literally juggling patient priorities in your mind and physically trying to make sure each patient’s needs are met.

It can be mentally tiring to carry such a deep sense of responsibility I have as a nurse. Working so closely with patients and their families can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. I feel completely blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of their lives in such a difficult time, but it is also a challenge to not become so attached to the situation.

Challenges: “Patience….patience…..patience…” Ensuring that questions are answered and individual needs are met takes quite a bit of patience. Interacting with a huge range of developmental stages of each individual requires a lot of patience and creativity.

“Trust and Respect” Trust is essential when I am accountable for the life of another person. With shows like ER, SCRUBS, and Grey’s Anatomy, the public image of a “nurse” can be skewed. There is the image of the nurse in the white hat, skirt, and stockings running around, blindly taking doctor’s orders. In the real world, this is hardly the case. The nurse becomes the patient’s advocate. The patient’s needs come first and they can not be met without a true team effort and common sense of respect. It can be a challenge to gain the respect and trust of others within a 12-hour period.

“Communication is the key.” Communicating effectively is necessary to ensure individual needs are met. It becomes challenging when language or cultural barriers come into effect. Nurses need to be resourceful, patient, and respectful of all differences when working with such a diverse patient population.

I would describe teaching as a love-hate relationship, there are so many positive aspects of my job and there are the downsides as well. For me the pros out weigh the cons but teaching isn’t for everyone. You must have a lot of patience and dedication for teaching.

Pros

1) Everyday is different! This may not be a “pro” for some but I like having some spontaneity and flexibility within my work day. Even though we have our daily routines, no day is every exactly the same. 6 and 7 year olds are very curious and for the most part eager learners, so they make things fun for me.

2) Benefits: The school district (Renton, WA) that I work for offers great health plans, dental, retirement, etc.

3) Vacation: I am paid for 182 work days and get the same vacations that the kids to, which is really great! We start school after Labor Day and school gets out mid June. I look forward to my week long breaks throughout the year, just when I am getting tired of work a break comes up and then I can return re-energized and relaxed.

4) Impact: Teaching is very rewarding for me. Kids spend so much of their day in school that it is crucial for me to provide as many opportunities as possible for students to be successful. Developing reading skills is huge in first grade; it is amazing to see the progress that students make and then to see how reading helps them grow in other subject area. Teaching to me is not just about academics and state standards but it is also about teaching students to become good citizens. At the beginning of each school year I spend a lot of time teaching students how to get along with one another, how to communicate effectively, and how to solve their own problems. Teaching this early on makes learning easier for students, of course we have to practice these social skills throughout the year but it is a great way to get everyone on board with how to build relationships in and out of school.

Cons

1) Emotionally draining: My first year of teaching was extremely emotional and challenging. I had the class from hell. This year the dynamics of my students are much better. Within each class there are usually 2 or 3 students with challenging behaviors, in my first year I had 7. When I have to continually stop instruction because some students are being disruptive it really makes learning difficult for the rest of the class. A lot of the times students act out because they haven’t learned another way to deal with what they want to do or because that is the way they get attention at home. Being a teacher has made be realize how important good parenting is and how a child can be shaped depending on the kind of home life that they have. It is heart breaking to hear about the sad things that go on in my students’ lives at such a young age. Because I cannot control what goes on at the homes of my students, I try to be a good model for my students and provide a safe and caring environment for students while they are with me at school.

2) Pay day: You only get paid once at the end of each month, however you do get pay checks monthly even though you aren’t working in the summer.

3) Out-of-pocket expenses: Last year was my first year teaching and I spent a lot of my own money on things for my classroom. Some schools have small amounts of money for new teachers that allow them to buy things for their classrooms. When walked into my classroom for the first time there were old books left over from the retired teacher, and old supplies, I bought new books for our classroom library, organizing bins, and borders/calendar/bulletin board decorations/charts etc. So at the beginning it is expensive to build a classroom. Throughout the school year we ask for donations so the kids can have snack daily and treats when we have celebrations for special dates.

4) Long hours – The school day starts at 8:35am and ends at 3:05pm, our contract hours are 8:05am-3:35pm, I usually get to work around 7:15/30am and leave 4:00pm (at the earliest) more regularly I stay until 4:30/5pm. Depending on where I would rather grade papers, prep projects (like tracing, cutting paper, designing assessments), and plan I bring home work to do at least 2 times a week. Sometimes I stay at work longer so that I don’t have to take things home. You definitely don’t get paid for all the time that you do put into planning and prepping for teaching. There are a few nights during the school year that teachers are expected to be present. For example, music concerts, conferences, and open house. Of course there are other evening activities that are offered to students and families by P.T.A. that we are encouraged to go to. I could spend even more unpaid time at school than I already do!

1) Free Travel - The American government guarantees a round-trip ticket to your host country regardless of whether or not you finish your two year service.

2) Free Training - When you sign up for Peace Corps they don't just throw you into bush village at the start of your job. Instead, they will give you an 8-10 weeks of training. The training course involves training in the relevant sector you have been assigned -- either Small Business, Health, Education, Fish Farming, and Agriculture. You will also be given training in the local customs and language. During the duration of you training you will be staying with a host family where you will have ample opportunity to practice the language you have been learning and observe first hand the local customs.

2) Work - After training you are then sent out to your site you where you expected to spend two years working in your sector. For my job, I was in the education sector working as a teacher at a Monkey Bay Secondary School in Malawi -- a country in south eastern Africa. As a teacher I was responsible for teaching Biology, Math, Chemistry, and Physics to grades 9-12. My school had virtually no resources -- no text books for students, overcrowded class rooms (70+ students in my largest class), no electricity, etc. In the face of such adversity, you are forced to be creative in your classes -- come up with your own labs using local resources and look for funding to build a science lab. All of this may sound intimidating, but I found that it was extremely rewarding working with the staff and students as they are all eager to learn.

3) Community Involvement - In addition to teaching I also was greatly involved with the community. I coached boys soccer, was a mentor to a local Youth Group, and even played on the local semi-pro soccer team. The Youth group I worked with was in a village along the lake and the only way to get there was by boat or by hiking for 1hr. Usually I would go there before lunch and then catch a boat back to the main village with one of the fishermen. The area is absolutely stunning!

4) Opportunities for travelling - Peace Corps gives you 2-days a month of vacation which gives you ample time to travel around the area. While I was in Malawi, I had the opportunity to travel to Mozambique, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana.

5) Rewarding Experience - After serving two years in your host country, the whole community will come together to say good bye to you. At this point you finally realize how much of a positive effect you had on your community. When I left the students put on a play where they acted out me having to deal with a corrupt principle who eventually had to leave the school and then after the play the staff at the school had a big feast for me as a way of saying thanks.

Cons

1) Duration of Job - Peace Corps is a 2 year commitment and that is a long time to be away from your family and friends. Chances are you will miss your friends wedding and family gatherings. During my service, I missed two weddings and multiple family gatherings.

2) Cultural Differences - It is a long time be away from the culture you are used too. You don't have the same ways of relieving stress -- such as hanging out with friends, going out to the movies, going out to dinner, missing family gatherings. The bars in my area were not a respectable place for any community leader, where they usually consisted entirely of men (mostly drunk) and prostitutes.

I expected to work in a Financial Services sector such as the Banking Industry, but ended up working as a Library Assistant in a Public Library in suburban Seattle and has been there in the last 14 years also enjoying it, low pressure, meeting all sorts of people/patrons, and get the first peek at the newest Harry Potter , among other perks!!. .

Getting married right after graduation and had a baby 10 months later and 2 more kids in 5 years , pretty much put a stop on my career dream in the corporate world. Then I found myself with a page job at a neighborhood Public library , shelving kids books during evening shift with my husband taking turns watching kids at home. When a library Assistant position became open. I applied and got it. I enjoy this upgraded position much better especially the double-pay. .

I consider myself lucky, I believe I got the best part-time work hours. My shift is from 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM everyday and two Saturdays a month, which is perfect for moms with small kids who wish to work part-time job. In my case, our kids were at school while I was at work and be home when they returned from school and still able to get involved in their extra curricular after school . We have many non-standard work hours, mostly part-time positions ( 20 hours per week) The Library offers morning, mid-day and evening work hours which is great for staff who wish to pursue other commitments such as second job or going for education.

A Day at the Library

As soon as the door opens, 5 or more patrons would file in, returning library materials, and nowadays immediately proceed to the computer terminals for some internet sessions.

During morning shifts, typical patrons are mothers with small preschool children, senior citizens, and professional who come in during their lunch hours to check out car values, investment news etc..

The most popular items to be checked –out are the best sellers, fiction and non-fictions. Elderly ladies love paperback novels, most popular are the Harlequin paperbacks with super Hunk Fabio and Sexy Ladies on the cover, believe it or not!. Men check out Chilton car manuals, and home improvement materials. .Professionals take out computer magazines, career items and other text books. Three times a week, our children Librarian has story times session for pre-schoolers which attrack 60 people ( adults and children) visitors .This weekly event is incredibly popular which includes pajama story times .

Under the supervision of a supervisor, library Assistant perform a variety of standard library and clerical duties to assist patrons; provide information, assist in locating materials and demonstrate proper use of reference materials; assist in the circulation and return of library books and materials.

Overview: Great Part-time Job and great pay for the type of duties we do and hardly any stress!!.

It’s great part-time jobs ( 20-24 hours per week). Management is very flexible to accommodate days off for staff family needs. Majority of our staff are members of AFSCME ( Association of Federal/ State/ County/Municipal Employees), thus we are considered government employees benefiting numerious paid holidays and vacations and other paid leaves. Decent medical and Dental coverage as well as 401 K .

For those who don’t enjoy desk job, this is ideal. Library Assistants are free to move about within the library. We constantly move from the Service to Check-out desk and back and other parts of the Library whenever patrons need assistance locating materials.

Since this is a Library which operates on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays for some libraries), all Library Assistants and Librarians must share and take turns working on some weekend full-day shift.

Working with public and meeting people can be interesting but at the same time , serving the public in a Library setting can be a pain as well. Library Assistants must also deal with homeless and transient people comin in , treating the library as their lodging, including using the public restroom as their changing and shower facility, or having drunken men doing their business on the public sofas.

Dealing with general public also means having to put up with belligerent, rude, cheating, inconsiderate individuals. Being Library Assistant stationed at the check-out desk , sometimes also having to call 9-1-1 for attempted thefts.
